The Hesley Group is a specialist independent provider, offering care, education and vocational opportunities for children, young people, and adults, often with autism and learning disabilities.
Established in 1975, Hesley Group has two specialist schools and two small specialist colleges, as well as a range of residential services. It was at one of these residential provisions where RISE installed a new annexe to help further the groups sensory options.
King Street, situated in a small market town on the outskirts of Doncaster offer a year round residential provision for younger adults, many of whom have Autism Spectrum Disorders.
Hesley Group first contacted RISE intending to install a modular pod to increase their sensory activities. But as conversations progressed, and the scale of the project increased, we realised that a modular build wouldn’t be the most suitable option — the building was too large.
Instead, RISE designed, planned, and built a custom-built annexe to better suit the needs of the Hesley Group and the young adults at King Street. The large annexe has three separate rooms to provide different types of sensory play.
Glyn Turner, Head of Estates & Facilities was impressed with the speed at which the project progressed once works building commenced:
“The RISE team excellently managed the design and build of our new extension, enabling us to enhance our sensory provision for our young adults.”
All works were all completed during lockdown with little disruption onsite, and of course, with the safety of our team and the Hesley occupants remaining paramount:
“Despite the recent lockdown, the project was completed on time and on budget, which is a great testament to RISE.”
Being community-based, King Street aim to equip young people with the tools they need to live more independently. As part of the wide range of activities and projects that the Hesley Group encourage their young people to participate in, sensory experiences play a key role when it comes to downtime, and the opportunity to relax or engage.
Across the groups’ schools, sensory boxes were already in use featuring sensory toys and equipment to help students improve self-regulation, motivation, and attention to tasks.
The new sensory extension built at King Street will go a long way towards enhancing that provision with a dedicated space for young people to enjoy.
