Changing Places toilets have seen a surge in popularity in recent years, in no small part thanks to the government’s Department of Levelling Up, Housing and Communities £30million fund for building new ones in public spaces.
Many clubs and sports venues have taken advantage of the funding available via their local councils, but if you haven’t and you’re not sure what a Changing Places toilet is, don’t worry: here’s a quick primer.
Changing Places toilets, or CPTs, are specially adapted accessible toilets for disabled people with complex or multiple needs. For many disabled people, a standard peninsular toilet and grab rail are enough to ensure they can use the toilet with dignity. However, for over 250,000 people in the UK, standard accessible facilities simply don’t provide the equipment they need.
Without CPTs, many disabled people are forced to make difficult choices when they’re out and about: either make only short trips, sit in a soiled continence pad or risk being changed in an unhygienic or unsafe place, such as on a public toilet floor.
Changing Places toilets are designed to meet the needs of those who require them as comprehensively as possible. Governed by the BS8300 standard, CPTs by law must have:
As standard, RISE CPTs also come equipped with a combination wetroom/shower, giving extra peace of mind and ensuring any uncomfortable messes can be dealt with quickly.
The accessible tourism industry in the UK is worth around £15.3billion a year, with CPT users and their travelling parties making up a not insignificant percentage of that massive figure. If your club is yet to consider the value that catering to the needs of disabled people can deliver, now’s definitely the time to start.
It’s also just the right thing to do!
As modular construction specialists, we’ve spent a lot of time developing a CPT product range that meets a range of requirements, without sacrificing client customisation. As a result, we have total control over the build process and can fabricate your CPT to a wide variety of different internal configurations, fits and finishes.
Our most popular product, the CP Pod, provides 12sqm of internal floorspace and comes fitted with all the necessary equipment to register as a Changing Places facility.
Our modular range also includes the: CP+1 Pod (6.6m x 3.4m); CP+2 Pod (8.8m x 3.4m); and CP+3 Pod (10.2m x 3.4m), all of which can be seen above.
Whether you’re looking for a standalone space, to combine a CPT with another type of accessible toilet or need something as simple as extra storage space, our CP Pod range can flex to meet your every need.
Got an existing space that you’re looking to repurpose or reimagine? We can help with that. Our experienced internal adaptations team make the impossible possible on a daily basis – see what they can do for you.
