Changing Places Case Study: Lewes District Council

Shopping & History

A historic market town in East Sussex, Lewes has a population of under 20,000 but is a great destination for shopping and history lovers alike. With various historic buildings including a brewery and of course, Lewes Castle, the town also makes a great base for exploring the wider Lewes district.

To help increase the number of facilities for both local and visiting disabled guests, RISE installed one of our modular Changing Places toilets at the heart of the market town.

Turnkey Service for Historic Town

Working with Lewes District Council we helped select the ideal location to build a Changing Places toilet. Friars Walk car park is centrally located, has great access, and already has an existing public toilet. The location makes the facility easy to find and is convenient for visitors either arriving for the day or leaving the town after a spot of shopping.

Delivering our trademark turnkey service, we helped the council with the entire process of installation from the planning stages through to handing over the keys to the finished modular facility. As the new Changing Places is in a conservation area, we had to be mindful of the appearance of the structure and a natural timber-clad exterior was agreed to be the most appropriate choice.

The interior set-up of the modular facility we installed at Friars Walk car park is our standard Changing Places toilet featuring an adult sized changing bench and hoist with the addition of a bespoke art wall – one side of the toilet features a beautiful shot of Lewes Castle, one of the town’s most popular attractions.

A Great Experience With Even Better Results

Funding for the Lewes Town Changing Places toilet came via the Levelling Up Housing and Communities scheme and is the second facility we have installed for Lewes District Council after we successfully installed a loo at the Gateway Café in Peacehaven. A third toilet is in the works for the Lewes district.

We’re really pleased to say that the installation at Lewes progressed smoothly without any issues.

Scope of Works

Working on our second build for Lewes District Council, we provided the following scope of works within a six week build programme:

  • Design, build, delivery, and installation of a modular Changing Places toilet
  • Bespoke timber clad exterior finish and interior photo wall
  • All groundworks, services and enabling works; and
  • Testing and commissioning of all specialist equipment.
