How Can You Raise Money For Changing Places?

How to raise money for Changing Places toilets now, and in the future.

Changing Places toilets are toilets that are larger and more accessible for people who are severely disabled. They have equipment such as hoists, privacy screens, adult-sized changing benches, peninsula toilets, and space for carers. All things to make these toilets better accessible not only for the disabled user but also for the carer that’s with them.

Changing Places are an incredibly important part of any community for many of the people who need them. The only problem is the amount. Which is why the government wants to see a change in the quantity of Changing Places toilets across the country. In order to do this, they’ve allocated a fund for local authorities to apply for.

All of this is to encourage and accelerate the provision in existing buildings that are already in England.

Current Funding for Changing Places Toilets

In 2021, the government opened applications for a share of a £30 million fund for Changing Places toilets (CPT). This fund was so that life improving CPTs could be installed in public places and tourist attractions.

The Work of Charities

Many charities work hard for this cause to make authorities take action. Like MDUK. As co-chair of the Changing Places consortium, MDUK work closely with DLUHC and other local authorities. They provide specialist expertise to support local councils that are awarded the funding.

Charities that are looking to raise funds for future Changing Place projects can also consider investing. Charities of all sizes can invest funds and there are even specialist companies that provide investment management for charities to help advise where funds are best allocated.

How To Raise Money For CPTs

Unfortunately, funds don’t always cover the amount you need. Many existing CPTs were funded due to campaigners’ hard work and public generosity.

  • Know The Rules: If you’re asking the public to donate, you need to comply by the law. The Code of Fundraising Practice has the standards you need to uphold while raising money.
  • Compelling Appeals: If the public understand why CPTs are important, raising funds will be easier. In order to get people to understand, an appeal is the best way to go. Talk about what they are, their importance, the figure you want to raise and how the money will be used. Always mention that these fundraisers are not for charity – they’re for installing well-needed facilities.
  • Seek Help: The Changing Places Consortium is a group of organisations all working hard to support the rights of people with disabilities. They can provide you with information, resources, tips to help you establish your own campaign and raise funds.
  • Set Up Your Team: Nothing this big can happen without a helping hand. Get a team! They can do everything from spreading the word to taking part in events and activities. Plus, they’ll likely all be enthusiastic about the cause and willing to put in their time for this fundraiser. When it comes to setting up the events, think of ones which usually get the most attention, like festivals and shows or sporting events and raffles.
  • Involve Local Communities: Involving your local community is the biggest, easiest, and often simplest way to get attention for your fundraiser. And to get locals to realise just what it is you’re doing and what it will mean for those living with disabilities.
