Cherry Orchard Sensory Room

Case Study: Cherry Orchard Primary School

During lockdown, the RISE team installed a modular sensory room to enhance provision at Cherry Orchard Primary School in Charlton, creating a sense of excitement with pupils (and staff!).

Dedicated to Inclusive Practice

The single form entry Primary school, which serves the local Greenwich community, has strong commitments to inclusive practice. This is driven by a senior leadership team that includes an executive principal, head of school and assistant head who are all trained SENCOs.

The Cherry Orchard team opted for a modular solution, due to the lack of existing space. In addition to the speedy installation and minimal disruption, having a stand-alone solution brought about another clear benefit, as head of school Buffy Lloyd explains:

“Pupils are able to come out of the school building and transition into a space that is separate, where they can explore without the limitations of worrying if someone can hear or see them. It’s a private space, and they can just do what they need to do, until they’re ready to return to the classroom.”

“A Huge Gain For Us”

Hayley Mourne, assistant head and SENCO, explains that whilst the Cherry Orchard team previously had a small sensory area for their pupils, it had limited use due to the lack of space and specialist equipment:

“Before we had our sensory pod, we had a small space dedicated for sensory provision that had a little bit of equipment, including things we had put in there ourselves. So this [sensory room] is a really huge gain for us, providing a dedicated space to cater for of the children’s needs.

“To have this space accessible for all children across the school is really exciting. Adults are excited, and the children that have been able to use it so far, are equally excited. We’re having to draw-up a timetable, as we’re almost fighting over the space!”

“No Disruption At All”

The key benefit of a modular installation is speed. A project of this nature takes three weeks to build offsite, with just a few days onsite to complete groundworks and deliver/install the facility.

“When it came to the week that the groundworks were starting and the pod was arriving, everything ran really quickly,” confirms Buffy. “There was no disruption at all. We have to use this space for children to walk into their classrooms and they were able to do that every day, really easily.

“Once the groundworks were done, the pod arrived on the crane and it was a bit of a spectacular event for local residents. As soon as it was in place, it was good to go.”

“I’d Absolutely Recommend It”

It has only been a few weeks the sensory pod was installed, and the Cherry Orchard team haven’t yet had the benefit of utilising it without COVID-19 restrictions in place. However, as Buffy explains, the teachers are enthusiastic about the the potential the pod brings:

“All of the teachers here are dedicated to our inclusive practice. and just showing them around, they’re all very excited just to have a space for their children to explore, help regulate, and return to learning.”

“I would absolutely recommend having a pod to any other schools,” concludes Buffy. “Not only was it very easy to install and quick to have ready for the children, it also provides an external space that has some real longevity.
