There are over 14 million disabled people in the UK, many of whom will require accessible toilet facilities, however, for over a quarter of a million of these, standard accessible toilets don’t meet their needs.
That’s why in 2006, Changing Places launched a campaign to make adapted Changing Places toilets mandatory in new builds and encourage them to be added to existing buildings.
Standard accessible toilets or what people refer to as ‘disabled toilets’ are often just a wider toilet cubicle or larger space, fitted with grab rails or an emergency buzzer. However, they do not typically include equipment such as changing benches or hoists, which people with certain disabilities require and many are simply too small to fit a person with disabilities along with their carers.
Changing Places toilets provide the correct equipment and adequate space, giving people with their disabilities and those caring for them a safe, dignified and hygienic environment. This is important because it allows everyone to access and enjoy public spaces without difficulty.
From 2021, Changing Places toilets are also a legal requirement in all new public buildings that have a capacity of over 350 people. So, why choose RISE for Changing Places facilities?
Here at RISE Adaptations, we combine our specialist knowledge with a real passion for inclusivity and accessibility.
The visionary behind RISE Adaptations, Ben Hickey has been involved with the Changing Places campaign for a decade. His original goal was to provide a simple solution for organisations looking to enhance their accessibility, and that continues to be our ethos today.
At RISE Adaptations, we truly believe in what we do, that’s why we developed our High Five Promise. This started out as a promise to donate five per cent of our time and annual profits to the Changing Places campaign but has developed into so much more. In addition to our five per cent, we’ve offered free advice, assisted with fundraising, and even offered discounts to projects we’re passionate about in order to benefit communities that need our help.
We have a range of partners and suppliers who all share our ethos, including experts Access For All UK who we work with to deliver accessibility training, audits and consultancy as well as free Changing Places seminars.
At RISE Adaptations, we pride ourselves on total customer satisfaction, which is reflected in our testimonials and feedback. To see some of our recent projects, you can view our portfolio.
Our Changing Places facilities have everything required to meet BS 8300 criteria and meet the needs of people living with disabilities, and their carers.
RISE Changing Places toilet facilities have adequate space for a disabled person and two carers and contain all the correct equipment needed. This includes a height-adjustable, adult-sized changing bench, a ceiling track hoist system and a central peninsular toilet with sufficient transfer space on either side along with a screen for privacy and dignity. Each facility also includes a wide tear-off paper roll to cover the bench, a large waste bin, and a non-slip floor, offering clean, safe facilities for people with disabilities and those caring for them.
