There are over 14 million disabled people in the UK, many of whom will require accessible toilet facilities, however, for over a quarter of a million of these, standard accessible toilets don’t meet their needs.

That’s why in 2006, Changing Places launched a campaign to make adapted Changing Places toilets mandatory in new builds and encourage them to be added to existing buildings.

Standard accessible toilets or what people refer to as ‘disabled toilets’ are often just a wider toilet cubicle or larger space, fitted with grab rails or an emergency buzzer. However, they do not typically include equipment such as changing benches or hoists, which people with certain disabilities require and many are simply too small to fit a person with disabilities along with their carers.

Changing Places toilets provide the correct equipment and adequate space, giving people with their disabilities and those caring for them a safe, dignified and hygienic environment. This is important because it allows everyone to access and enjoy public spaces without difficulty.

From 2021, Changing Places toilets are also a legal requirement in all new public buildings that have a capacity of over 350 people. So, why choose RISE for Changing Places facilities?
