We’re All Going to the Zoo

ZSL Whipsnade Zoo in Bedfordshire is far more than just a tourist attraction – it is at the vanguard of science-led conservation. Part of the Zoological Society London, it has a global network involved in 50 habitats worldwide, in over 70 countries.

As the UK’s largest Zoo, the site features a host of attractions, including over 10,000 animals, spread over 600-acres of beautiful parkland. Providing easy access to as much of this space as possible to people with disabilities has always been a priority, and accessibility was recently boosted with the addition of a new Changing Places toilet.

Cementing an Existing Commitment

Having previously hired temporary and mobile Changing Places via PAMIS, the Whipsnade team were fully aware of the benefits of having such a facility onsite. This ultimately led to appointing RISE to adapt existing toilet facilities into a permanent Changing Places toilet, with support from Central Bedfordshire Council’s successful bid for Levelling Up funding.

The scope of works for RISE included everything from the initial first fix plumbing and electrics, to the installation of new wall panelling, safety flooring and suspended ceilings, plus the installation of all specialist healthcare equipment.

The newly registered facility also includes a height adjustable changing bench with shower, a height adjustable basin, and a ceiling track hoist system, to aid severely disabled visitors and their carers.
