Changing Places Case Study: Dorset West Bay Holiday Park

Accessibility By The Sea

West Bay Holiday Park in Dorset has made its holidays more accessible by installing a RISE Adaptations Changing Places toilet installed on site.

Whilst the park already had several adaptations for accessibility it was lacking a place where people with a severe disability could get changed and freshen up in comfort and with dignity.

With 52% of all businesses in Dorset providing some sort of holiday accommodation, this addition will help Parkdean, the owner of West Bay Holiday Park, remain competitive in the market whilst ensuring all their guests have equal access to essential amenities.

Changing Places Adaptation

As part of the £30 million government programme to increase the number of Changing Places in public places across the UK, Dorset Council received grant funding from the Department of Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC).

They approached RISE for our expert advice and research into the best place to construct a Changing Places toilet.

We conducted research and surveys to identify two key locations: West Bay Holiday Park and North Beach Car Park.

Once the locations were agreed upon, we set to work with our trademark full turnkey installation.

This included designing and planning an adaptation of an existing toilet block, completing the work within 3 weeks, and registering the facility with the CP Consortium.

A Fantastic Initiative

Our adaptation project proceeded without any difficulties – as we adapted an existing toilet block into the new Changing Places facility, we did have to widen the existing door to accommodate a wheelchair. We managed this with minimal disruption to the enjoyment of the holidaymakers on site.

Scope of Works

We completed the project within two weeks and handed over the new toilet to the holiday park ready for holidaymakers to use.

As with all our compliant Changing Places toilets, we installed a height-adjustable changing bench, ceiling hoist, peninsular toilet and height-adjustable sink. As this facility is located in a holiday park we also installed a shower to make the space even more convenient for disabled guests.
