The Latest Changing Places Toilets Stats And Facts

Changing Places are becoming more and more prominent throughout the UK, thanks to the work of the Changing Places Consortium and providers such as RISE. This blog aims to uncover the latest Changing Places toilets stats and facts.

The number of Changing Places facilities across the UK is ever-growing – the total number of Changing Places toilets that have been registered is currently 1722, and that number is increasing! This is great news for businesses and Changing Places users.

Latest On Changing Places

The Changing Places Consortium are an establishment that will be constantly growing and improving its approach – until every establishment in the UK hosts a Changing Places facility.

Their campaign aims to see Changing Places toilets installed in all public venues, allowing those with profound disabilities to have accessible facilities wherever they go.

There are currently over a quarter of a million people in the UK whose needs are not met by standard disabled access toilets and need further assistance from the equipment and facilities that Changing Places units can offer.

Thankfully, more companies around the UK are recognising the Consortium’s efforts and are being proactive in aiding the campaign, opening conversations about how to make their business more accessible to those who are severely disabled.

Did you know? 42% of pension-age adults are disabled.

Funding

In 2021, the UK Government set a £30 million budget to aid the installation of more Changing Places facilities across the country up to 2023/24, hugely helping with the Consortium’s cause. A further round of funding is predicted for late 2022.

Funding will help provide over 500 Changing Places Facilities throughout the country. It is said that 191 councils will receive a share of the further £23.5 million of government funding that was allocated this Spring.

“It goes without saying that people with severe disabilities, their families and carers should be able to go shopping, plan a day out or travel without needing to worry about whether they will have access to suitable toilet facilities.

I am delighted that our funding today will help provide over 500 new Changing Places Toilets in England, enabling people to enjoy everything their local area has to offer with dignity and freedom.” says MP Eddie Hughes.

You can find out more about your local district’s funding allocation here.

Did you know? The number of people living with sight loss will increase to over 2.7 million in 2030.

What Has RISE Done To Help?

Listening to the people, more and more companies that fall under these categories have contacted RISE in order to make their establishments more accessible to the Changing Places facilities.

Some of our recent case studies include:

  • Warwick Castle. A well-known tourist attraction where RISE converted an existing WC into a Changing Places toilet.
  • Shorne Woods Country Park. We installed a modular Changing Places facility into this public park, making it more accessible and therefore attracting more visitors.
  • Manchester Airport Station. Adding another Changing Places toilet into the transport sector, we worked with TransPennine Express to install a Changing Places toilet into the station.

We also design and install Changing Places facilities in arenas, leisure centres and shopping centres.

The National Disability Strategy

The National Disability Strategy was set out in July 2021, highlighting the actions the government will take to improve the lives of disabled people.

This document focuses on the priorities that the 13.9 million disabled people across the UK have highlighted and sets out a range of practical solutions to improve their everyday lives. Which highlights the plan to “accelerate the delivery of Changing Places toilets in England”

“A major change to building rules in England means that it is now compulsory to include a Changing Places toilet in certain new public buildings, including shopping centres, supermarkets, cinemas, stadia, and arts venues with a capacity of 350 people or more. We expect this to add these crucial facilities to more than 150 new buildings a year, meaning thousands of disabled people will have greater access to public places.” – UK Disability Survey Respondent

Did you know? Only 20% of women with disabilities are in employment
