Frimley Park Hospital is a large, general hospital in Frimley, Surrey. Managed by Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust. The hospital is notable for a couple of reasons – it was the first in the country to be rated ‘outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission in 2014 and is also host to the Defence Medical Group with military medical staff working alongside NHS colleagues to deliver care to patients.
RISE were awarded tender packages to install a modular Changing Places toilet at the hospital and help the Trust meet its accessibility commitments.
Installing a Changing Places toilet at Frimley Park Hospital has been in the works for a while, with the project coordination team at the hospital consulting various local groups before and during the project, including local disabled students.
“We held quite a few discussions about where the Changing Places toilet should be located. Frimley is a large busy hospital, and it was felt that situating the new toilet outside the hospital would make it easy to find. This option also meant the toilet would be accessible to the wider community, not just hospital visitors,” says Jan MacSporran, Senior Projects Manager – Capital Projects.
With the feasibility of the project and funding both secured, the Trust put the work out to tender as two separate packages. One for the civils and enabling works, and one for the installation of a modular CP facility. RISE were awarded both.
The five-week groundworks project was significant. Once the site was secure, we progressed with large-scale excavations, installing services and concrete foundations, plus a 12,000-litre water storage tank. Asphalt paths and new concrete paving were also installed
The hospital’s modular CP facility was built at our Doncaster premises, in strict accordance with our 58-page build manual. Once the structure was complete and kitted-out with all required specialist equipment, the pod was delivered to the site, then installed, tested, and commissioned, prior to handing over to the Trust.
The civil works required at Frimley Park were substantial, and whilst we encountered a few unforeseen issues along the way, we remained on programme throughout.
The hospital site is extremely busy, and safety was paramount. The emergency department sees 120,000 people every year, admits 55,000, and almost half a million outpatient appointments are provided each year. With the project taking place close to emergency ambulance bays, the phasing of our works and deliveries had to be meticulous to minimise any onsite disruption.
Despite the challenging nature of the project, the Frimley team are thrilled with the final product, as are the local community, and disabled hospital visitors.
“Hospitals are one of the key locations where Changing Places are needed, and this is the first modular CP installation for the NHS” concludes Jan. “The Trust are delighted that we can now bring this type of facility to visitors and the wider community. Working with RISE was a great decision. They managed the project brilliantly and remained on schedule throughout.”
