Thanks to funding via the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC), RISE has installed a modular Changing Places toilet on Silloth Green.
The Green is one of the largest in the North of England, boasting spectacular views over the Solway Firth. With tourism being one of the mainstays of Silloth’s economy, the newly registered facility will play a key role in making the town more accessible and no doubt financially benefit a host of local businesses.
Having explored alternate venues for a Changing Places, including the town’s motorcycle museum, Silloth Town Council decided that a modular facility on the Green was the ideal location. Following a competitive tender process, RISE was awarded a contract for the turnkey delivery a new modular facility, complete with groundworks.
The facility is a standard RISE CP Pod, fully built offsite at our Doncaster premises. It features a host of specialist mobility equipment, such as ceiling track hoist system and height adjustable changing bench, as well as the required space and layout to be required as a Changing Places.
Custom finished in silver grey cladding with a bold blue violet door, the modular pod was complete within a few weeks and installed into position onto foundations, prepared by the RISE team. The facility was connected and commissioned within a few hours, before handing over to a happy client.
Silloth Town Council held an opening ceremony on the 18th March 2023, which was attended by a number of local residents, as well as council’s accessibility committee, which played a key role in making the project happen.
Another key attendee was Workington MP Mark Jenkinson, who commented on the day:
“It’s just a fantastic addition to Silloth, a fantastically inclusive place to holiday and visit. There’s lots of level access. They’ve got a team that have worked hard on dropped curbs and other access for those who are wheelchair bound, and it’s fantastic to see this great addition – one of the best equipped Changing Places facilities in Cumbria.”
The Changing Places toilet on Silloth Green is one of three facilities planned by Allerdale Borough Council, thanks to £134,000 government funding. The facility features a host of specialist equipment to aid profoundly disabled users and is now registered on the Changing Places map.
Within a five-week build programme, RISE designed, built, delivered and installed a new modular Changing Places toilet, delivered a comprehensive groundworks package, connected all existing services, and commissioned all specialist equipment.
